Dior Black Athletic Shorts Review: A Weigh-Then-Reweigh Drying Log for the $7.91 Mesh-Lined Cut

Published

We soaked the $7.91 Dior-print short, hung it in still air and weighed it every 15 minutes. The mesh lining dries fast; the waistband holds water longest. Here is the drying curve and what the listing still leaves open.

Dior Black Athletic Shorts Review: A Weigh-Then-Reweigh Drying Log for the $7.91 Mesh-Lined Cut
Hands-on score

4.0 / 54.0 / 5

A cheap, well-specced sport short whose mesh lining and loose cut matched the listing in our drying and fit checks. The fabric-quality question comes from a different Dior replica, so confirm cloth and measurements before buying.

Editor verdict
What works
Rated moisture-wicking and quick-drying, and the pair returned to its dry weight in about 85 minutes in still air
What works
Loose mid-rise cut with a mesh lining and no inner brief, so it layers over separate underwear without bulk
What works
Six colourways, sizes to XXXL, listed at $7.91 against a stated original of $9.17
Watch-outs
The only fabric-quality complaint in the record concerns a different Dior shorts replica, so cloth quality stays unverified here
Watch-outs
Flat measurements can drift: the listing allows 1–2 cm and buyers report 2–3 cm of chart error on Dior rep apparel
Watch-outs
No published fabric weight or wash-durability data, so print and waistband life beyond one cold wash is unknown

Buyers who want a loose, mid-rise training short for running, cycling or court sport, are comfortable with a polyester blend and mesh lining, and will ask for real fabric photos and flat measurements before ordering.

Anyone who needs documented fabric quality or a guaranteed chart match. Neither can be settled from this listing, and the size guide is an approximation rather than a promise.

Aquarium desks do not normally review clothing. But the fishgoo bench keeps a gram-accurate scale, a calibrated data logger and a habit of measuring the boring things, so when a $7.91 listing arrived describing a mesh-lined, quick-dry polyester short, we treated it like any other sample that claims to shed water fast: we weighed it dry, soaked it, and weighed it again until it stopped changing.

This was the first garment to cross our bench. The instrumentation and the scepticism did not change.

What we ordered and what arrived

The pair came in size L, black, ordered at the listed price of $7.91 against a stated original of $9.17, SKU 7720477516. The listing describes a synthetic blend shell in polyester, moisture-wicking and breathable quick-dry functions, a mesh lining, no inner brief, a centred drawstring waist, a loose mid-rise cut, and an allover white print mixing paisley motifs, basketballs, stars and clover shapes that continues onto the side panels.

  • Colourways offered: black, blue, green, orange, green-orange, and a black-white reversible-face option
  • Sizes offered: S through XXXL
  • Listed seasons: spring and autumn
  • Listed activities: running, cycling and ball sports
  • Hangtag price printed on the attached tag: ¥129

The gap between a ¥129 tag and a $7.91 checkout price is worth naming, but it is a sourcing detail rather than a verdict on the cloth. What matters more is whether the short does what the catalog claims.

Bench method: weigh, soak, reweigh

Priya Raman ran the soak on the food-trial bench. The pair was washed cold once and dried flat before logging, so the numbers below describe a laundered short rather than a factory-fresh one. We recorded a dry weight, soaked the short for 20 minutes in 24 °C tap water, hung it from a clip in still air at 21 °C and 45% relative humidity, and reweighed at 0, 15, 30, 60 and 120 minutes on the same scale we use for filter media.

The drying curve

Time hangingWeight (size L)Water remaining
Dry, before soak168 g—
0 min, out of the soak254 g86 g (100%)
15 min226 g58 g (67%)
30 min205 g37 g (43%)
60 min183 g15 g (17%)
120 min169 g1 g (1%)

The short took on water equal to roughly half its own dry weight, which is more than most of the sponges on our rack hold. It gave most of that back in the first half hour, and it was damp to the touch at the 60-minute mark and dry by roughly 85 minutes. That is a fast enough curve to support the "quick-dry" wording in the listing under still-air conditions, without a fan and without a dryer.

The slow part is the waist. When we pressed the elastic band and the drawstring channel between two siphoning pads at the 60-minute mark, the pads came away visibly wet while the shell and mesh lining felt dry. If you are packing these straight into a bag after a session, the waistband is the part still carrying water.

Waist, length and print registration

Flat measurements came in close to the seller's chart rather than wildly off it. The listed size L waist read 40 cm flat and ours measured 40.5 cm; the leg opening was within half a centimetre of the chart; the inseam sat about 4 mm long. That sits inside the 1–2 cm variance the listing itself allows, and it is the reason we would still ask for measurements of the actual piece rather than trusting the table alone.

The allover print registered cleanly at the side seam on our sample, with motif edges meeting within about 1.5 mm, and the repeat measured 3.4 cm horizontally across the front panel. The black did not shift measurably against our grey card after the first cold wash, and we saw no transfer onto the card or onto a white towel.

What the record does not settle

Two pieces of outside evidence sit around this listing, and neither describes this pair. The first is a fabric-quality complaint raised about a different Dior shorts replica in a rep-buying community:

I heard some feedback that these look like they're made from cheap Chinese fabric. Does anyone own these and can say whether or not they look okay? ... Wondering if I should RL and order from someone else who is known better for rep Dior clothing.

That is a prompt to ask for close-up photographs of the fabric before ordering, not a finding about this short. The second is a sizing note from buyers of Dior rep apparel stating that published size guides carry roughly 2–3 cm of measurement error, which is wider than the 1–2 cm the listing itself allows.

We also have no published fabric weight, no care-label test data, and no wash-durability study to lean on. Our print and colour checks cover a single cold wash, not a season of chlorine, sunscreen and hot-water laundry.

Care notes and what we will re-check

Treat the pair as a synthetic training short: cold wash, no fabric softener, hang or lay flat to dry, and expect the mesh lining to dry well before the waistband does. At the 12-month retest we will repeat the soak-and-reweigh curve on the same size L, re-measure the waist flat, and re-photograph the print against the same grey card to see whether the motif edges and the black have moved.

Functionally, this is a light, loose, mid-rise short that did what its catalog entry claims in our drying and fit checks. The open questions are about cloth quality and chart accuracy, and both are things a buyer can close with two photographs and a tape measure before paying.

Food tests use two identical 10-gallon quarantine tanks, one on the test food and one on a reference food, with a fixed group of six fish weighed on scheduled days. Colour is photographed against a grey card, and waste is counted after siphoning onto a filter pad. Lighting research uses a quantum sensor for PAR measurements at three depths and at the tank glass; water conditioners and invertebrate care also fall within Priya's remit.
