Review methodology

Last reviewed

Every review follows the same sequence. We order the product at retail and log the order date, delivery date and condition on arrival. We photograph the packaging and note crush damage, missing parts and whether the manual matches the hardware. We install the product in a running tank with a known cycle history.

For filters, we measure flow with a graduated bucket and a stopwatch at day 1, day 14 and day 42, and record flow loss. For heaters, we compare the set temperature to a calibrated data logger every 30 minutes for seven days. For fish foods, we run an eight-week feeding trial on a single species group, tracking weight, colour, waste output and water clarity, with a control group on a reference food. For water conditioners and test kits, we run paired samples against a reference test and log the variance. We keep a comparison table of every measured value side by side.

Two editors sign off on the raw data before a score is published. Hands-on scores use the full 1 to 5 scale, and each score is written as X / 5. We name the tanks, the species, the water parameters and the test dates in the review so another hobbyist can repeat the work.

Scope of the findings

A review identifies tank volume, cycle history, species group, water parameters, control conditions and observation dates. Differences between tanks or groups are reported; a bench reading does not establish safety for every aquarium.
