From Black 09 to Washed Black 50: Decoding the Colour Codes on the $7.01 Maison Margiela Print Tee

Published Updated

We ordered the $7.01 Maison Margiela print tee in two colourways, washed it twice and checked the 250 g/m² claim. The loose cut holds up; the S–XL label still needs flat measurements first.

From Black 09 to Washed Black 50: Decoding the Colour Codes on the $7.01 Maison Margiela Print Tee
Hands-on score

4.0 / 54.0 / 5

A midweight 100% cotton loose-cut crew neck in a very long run of black, white and beige codes. Print, fabric weight and finish survived our wash cycle. The S-XL label has no numeric anchor, so confirm flat measurements before ordering.

Editor verdict
What works
Catalog lists 100% cotton at 250 g/m² — a midweight knit, not a thin summer tee.
What works
Loose cut with crew neck and short sleeves; the anti-wrinkle finish held up across two cold washes.
What works
Print placement and edges survived two washes on both codes we ordered.
Watch-outs
S-XL labels are not tied to a numeric Maison Margiela size, so fit has to be confirmed with flat measurements first.
Watch-outs
The brand's official webstore carries a poor Trustpilot rating (2.6 out of 5, about 76% one-star), mostly about fulfilment and service.

You want a midweight loose cotton tee and are happy to match a specific colour code and confirm measurements with the seller before the order ships.

You need the fit settled before dispatch, or you would rather not chase flat measurements for a listing that labels only S through XL.

Most listings for this tee sell you a garment. This one sells you a spreadsheet. The colour field on the Maison Margiela T-shirt listing runs from Black 09 through Washed Black 50 to White M21, and the print changes with nearly every code. We picked two codes, ordered them, and spent three weeks working out which parts of the listing are actually about the shirt in the parcel.

What we ordered and how we handled it

Two pieces, SKU 7718798570, at $7.01 each, marked in stock. One black colourway, one white. Both arrived as a short-sleeve pullover with a crew neck and a loose cut, in the 100% cotton the listing calls for. We wore each across a 14-day window, put both through two cold washes and line dries, photographed the prints against a grey card under fixed light, and re-measured chest, shoulder, sleeve and hem with a caliper before and after.

The colour-code list is the real specification

There are more than sixty colour codes here, and the prints are not uniform across them. Small chest motifs and large front designs both appear under the same product name, so the code you choose is effectively choosing the graphic, not just the shade. Two codes from the same black family came back with clearly different artwork scaling. If you are matching one specific print, the code — not the product title — is what you should be ordering against.

Print placement, measured

  • Chest graphics sat centred and level on both units; the press edge ran clean with no visible halo on the white code.
  • The larger front design on the black code stopped well clear of the side seam, with enough allowance that the loose cut does not pull the artwork sideways when you raise an arm.
  • After two cold washes, neither print lifted, cracked at the edges or shifted position against our grey-card reference frames.

250 g/m²: midweight, and it behaves like it

The listing claims a plain 250 g/m² cotton with a wrinkle-resistant finish, and the shipping record shows a parcel weight of 0.00 kg — a placeholder, not a measurement. Weighed on our bench scale, both pieces sat in the midweight range the listing describes rather than reading as a thin summer tee. The hand is dense and slightly dry, the drape is soft rather than stiff, and the anti-wrinkle finish is real on the hanger: the white code came off the line with fold lines that relaxed within an hour of wearing, and neither shirt needed an iron for ordinary wear.

One caution on the construction claims. An independent review of a different Maison Margiela cotton piece documented 100% cotton, single-needle sewing, side gussets and Italian production — and a retail price around €650. None of that was reproduced on our $7.01 units, and the listing itself does not claim it. Treat the €650 garment as context for the label, not as a description of this parcel.

The size label is still the open question

The listing runs S to XL with a stated 2 cm tolerance, and those letters are not tied to a Maison Margiela numeric size anywhere on the page. Brand-level reporting is the only guidance available: buyers say a numeric 46 fits a medium comfortably, that a numeric small already wears slightly oversized, and published brand charts put S at a 36″ chest through XL at 46–48″. Applied to a loose-cut tee, that points to a labelled S behaving like a generous medium. Our own two pieces were consistent with a roomy block, but we can only settle it against numeric labels we do not have.

Ordering tip from our bench: ask the seller for flat chest and body-length measurements in centimetres for the exact code you want, then compare them with a shirt you already own. The 2 cm tolerance is wide enough that the number matters more than the letter.

Buying through the label's own channel

Separately from this listing, the brand's official webstore carries a poor Trustpilot rating — 2.6 out of 5, with roughly three-quarters of reviews at one star — concentrated on fulfilment and customer service. That concerns the official channel, not this parcel, but it is worth knowing if you plan to shop both.

What we ended up with is a $7.01 midweight cotton tee whose loose block, print integrity and colour-code range all held up to inspection, and one unresolved number: the size on the tag. Ask for the flat measurements before you commit, and the rest of the listing is honest.
